Our staff here at Bernardi Honda of Brockton want you to know we care. We found some interesting information on falling asleep while driving, that we hope you will pass on and not pass out from reading.
Becoming impaired and possibly becoming injured or even causing a fatality to your self and others can make you have a really bad day. Did you know that drowsy drivers have less patience, impaired judgement, awareness, and less reaction time. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that over 30,000 reported crashes involved drowsy driving. Center for Disease Control and Prevention finished a study and reported 4.2% of the population they had phone interviews with; admitted having fallen asleep at the wheel.
When do you know that you are becoming a drowsy driver? Repeated yawning is a clear indication that you are becoming a risk. However, the following are also some signs that you are turning into a Sleep Driver:
- Can’t remember your thoughts
- Keep having to pull your vehicle back into the lane
- Tailgating or missing signs
- Wandering thoughts
- Can’t remember the last few miles driven
The solution is prevention. There are several things you can do to prevent falling asleep at the wheel and/or sleepy driving.
Get a good nights rest. Pull over and drink a caffeinated beverage (remember it takes about 30 minutes before it starts working). Stay away from cold and allergy medicine that causes drowsiness. Don’t work all day and drive all night. Don’t take longer than a 20 minute nap during the day. If you’re really tired pull over and sleep somewhere.
